How to Set a Surf Alert for Your Home Break
Most surfers check a forecast the way they check the weather: every morning, in a hurry, looking for a yes or a no. A surf alert flips that around. Instead of you going to the forecast, the forecast comes to you — but only when the specific combination of numbers that makes your break work actually shows up.
The catch is that an alert is only as good as the thresholds you give it. Set them too loose and it fires every other day until you stop reading it. Set them too tight and it stays silent through the best swell of the month. This is a practical guide to picking those numbers.
The four numbers a surf alert should watch
A wave arriving at your beach is the product of four things, and a good alert watches all four rather than just the headline height.
1. Swell height — the number everyone starts with
Swell height is the open-ocean energy heading your way. It is not the size of the wave you will surf. A 3 ft open-ocean swell at long period can break well overhead at a spot that focuses it, and barely reach knee high two miles down the beach. Use height as a coarse filter, then let the other three numbers do the real work.
2. Period — the number most people leave out
Period is the gap in seconds between passing waves, and it is the single best clue about where the energy came from and how it will behave when it hits the sand. Short-period swell (roughly 6–9 seconds) is usually local wind chop: it arrives disorganised and loses most of its punch in shallow water. Long-period swell (14 seconds and up) was generated by a distant storm, has travelled a long way to sort itself out, and refracts and stands up dramatically as it feels the bottom.
The practical consequence: the same 3 ft reading can mean two completely different days. If you set only a height threshold, your alert cannot tell those days apart. 3. Direction — every break has a window
Coastline shape, headlands, islands and offshore banks all decide which directions actually reach a given spot. A south-facing beach can be flat while an exposed east-facing one down the road is well overhead on the same day, purely because of where the swell is coming from.
Learn your break's window. If you have surfed a spot for a season you probably already know it intuitively — "it needs some south in it", "it goes flat when the swell swings too far north". An alert lets you write that intuition down as a range of degrees and then stop having to remember it.
4. Wind — the number that decides whether any of it is surfable
Wind is the difference between a good forecast and a good session. Offshore or light wind grooms the face; onshore wind at even a moderate speed can turn a clean long-period swell into something closed-out and lumpy. A swell alert with no wind condition attached will happily wake you up for a day that is technically big and practically unsurfable.
Be honest with yourself about your own tolerance here, and set it once. Plenty of breaks handle a few knots of cross-shore fine. Very few improve with fifteen.
Picking your thresholds: start loose, tighten after two misses
There is no universal correct setting, because "good" is a property of you and your break, not of the ocean. A reliable way to converge on the right numbers:
- Start deliberately loose. Set a height and period floor that you think will fire roughly once a week.
- Keep a two-line note on every alert that fires. Did you go? Was it worth it?
- After two alerts that were not worth the drive, raise one number — not three. Usually the period floor, occasionally the wind ceiling.
- After a good day your alert missed, work out which single condition excluded it and widen that one.
Two or three rounds of this and you will have thresholds that describe your break better than any generic preset could. The point of the exercise is that you end up with numbers you understand, rather than numbers you inherited.
Three worked examples
These are illustrative starting points for three different kinds of break, not recommendations for a particular day. Adjust them to your own experience.
An open beach break: Robert Moses, New York
Sandbar beach breaks are direction-tolerant but period-sensitive — the bars need enough energy to stand a wave up, and onshore wind wrecks them quickly. Coves and pockets are the opposite problem: they are protected from a lot of wind, which is exactly why they work, but that same shelter narrows the range of swell directions that get in. Some spots only really switch on for one specific combination, and for those an alert earns its keep — it stops you from checking daily for weeks and then missing the day it happens. Set the direction window tight and the period floor high, and accept that it will stay quiet for long stretches. That silence is the alert working. See The Wedge.

What a good alert will not do
It will not promise you a size. Forecast confidence is not uniform across lead time, and it is not uniform across the kind of system producing the swell. When a groundswell has already been generated and is in transit, its arrival window and period are largely a matter of travel time and physics — that is a call worth making with some confidence. When the storm that will produce the swell has not formed yet, or when a tropical system's track is what decides whether anything reaches you at all, genuine uncertainty remains no matter how confident the graphic looks.
Beach-level size is the open question in both cases. Bathymetry, tide and local wind decide what a given amount of open-ocean energy actually turns into at your sandbar, and that last step is where the honest error bars live.
So treat an alert as what it is: a filter that tells you when the ingredients are present and worth your attention. The decision about whether to load the car is still yours, and it should still involve looking at the wind on the morning.
Getting started
Pick one break — your most-surfed one — and set a single alert on it. Do not set six on day one; you will not learn anything from six streams of notifications firing at once. Give one alert two weeks, tighten it twice, and it will start to be genuinely useful. Then add the next spot.
